The Force Field Analysis is a powerful tool for change first developed by Kurt Lewin.  The first step consists of listing all of the driving forces (those that would be in favor of the change) and resisting forces (those that would be against the change). Next, each force is given a number to represent its intensity from one to five. This is followed by a discussion about which driving forces can be increased and/or which resisting forces can be decreased to bring about the desired change.

The power of the process is found in the discussion.  Working together with a team that is dedicated to the change and brings an honest and open mindset to the process is the key to creating a useful action plan.  Implementing the plan can lead to positive change.
